The Sharon Tobias Award
Background
In memory of Dr. Sharon Tobias, a brilliant and gentle soul driven by curiosity, a passion for art, and a generous spirit who found beauty and humor in life.
Dr. Sharon Tobias was an inspiring physician whose life encompassed a profound commitment to exploration of the medical sciences, exemplary integrity, and a deep love for her family. She went on to teach for the AK WWAMI School of Medical Education, her alma mater, finding joy and purpose in sharing her expertise and experiences with student physicians.
Sharon’s academic journey was both unique and impressive. Her graduate education career began with and NSF Fellowship in Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell. She then earned her Doctorate in Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine, completed a family medicine residency, and went on to practice for 2 years. Her academic curiosity let her to a second residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Dartmouth University and a fellowship in hematopathology at Vanderbilt University. Sharon’s broad medical experiences shaped her approach to patient care which was characterized by rigorous investigation and a thoroughness that ensured the best possible outcomes for her patients. She played a pivotal role in establishing clinical flow cytometry in Alaska and held numerous leadership positions in medicine over her 20+ years career.
Beyond her professional achievements, Sharon was an accomplished artist who painted stunning depictions of nature and life, and who loved skiing, ballet dancing, and spin classes. She enjoyed and excelled in celebrating holiday traditions and decorations, baking, and flower gardening. Sharon’s exceptional generosity, humility, and kindness, with a quite distinct fun-loving playful streak, endeared her to family, friends, patients, and colleagues. Her words and actions were always thoughtful and meaningful, reflecting her deep integrity and compassion.
Above all, Sharon was a devoted mother who loved her boys deeply and was fiercely committed to guiding them toward becoming kind, loving, responsible, and intelligent human beings. She was a genuine Super Woman.
The Award
The award shall consist of an engraved plaque and gift certificate to be presented to the recipient at Anchorage at the end of the Foundations Phase of medical school.
Eligibility and Selection Process
All second-year medical students in the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ WWAMI Program shall be eligible. Nominations for the award are submitted to the Director. Nominations may be made by individual members of the current class, or by Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ WWAMI faculty or staff. Nominations from fellow students, faculty and staff will be forwarded to the selection committee* and Director, who will make the final decision.
