The Alaska Legislature appropriated $1 million to begin planning for a new on-campus sports complex at the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Chancellor Fran Ulmer has created a planning team to develop a comprehensive plan for determining location, design, funding, construction, operation, traffic and parking, and other assorted elements associated with a multi-use facility. Bill Spindle, who was recently named interim vice chancellor for administrative services at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, heads the planning team. The planning process is expected to take up to a year to complete.

"I want to thank the Legislature for providing the money to begin the planning process for a much-needed sports complex on campus," said Chancellor Ulmer. "We will involve the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ family, our neighbors and the Anchorage community in this planning process. Construction of a sports complex to meet both the needs of our students and the needs of the Municipality is an important step in strengthening community partnerships and developing the Anchorage campus."

Governor Palin has until July 1 to make final decisions about the budget.

Preliminary discussions within the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ athletic community have occurred over the past several years, the result of which are several preliminary sports complex and arena concepts. Artists renderings, available online at goseawolves.com, show some of the designs the planning committee will consider.
