Workplace Assessments

Do you have concerns or questions about hazards in your work area? The Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management department can help. Contact us to request a workplace assessment to identify potential hazards and provide recommendations to improve safety.

 

Safety Training

Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management can help coordinate and facilitate a variety of safety trainings, including:

  • First Aid / CPR / AED

  • Hazard Communication (GHS)

  • Bloodborne Pathogens

  • Fall Protection

  • Respiratory Protection

  • Hearing Conservation

  • Portable Fire Extinguisher Training

Ergonomics

If you are interested in scheduling an ergonomic assessment for your workspace, please send an email request to sawilcox@alaska.edu or uaa_ehsrm@alaska.edu. We can help evaluate workstations and provide recommendations to improve comfort and reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries.

 

Ice Cleats Program

Ice cleats are available to all staff, faculty and student employees at the Consortium Library. Stop by to pick up a pair, or submit a request to the library for a departmental pick up. Please include the amount, style and size you need, as well as the name of the person picking up.

 

Loss Prevention

The Loss Prevention program supports one-time projects that reduce risk, prevent injuries, and protect University property. Departments can apply for funding to address identified safety concerns through equipment upgrades, training, or corrective measures. This program is intended to proactively mitigate hazards, not replace routine operating budgets or deferred maintenance.

Resources and Frequently Asked Questions


Report all workplace injuries, near misses, or unsafe conditions as soon as possible through the university’s incident reporting system (Origami). If medical attention is needed, contact UPD for assistance. For questions, reach out to Environmental Health & Safety and Risk Management.
Ice cleats are offered through the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Consortium Library for all staff, faculty, and student employees. Stop by to pick up your free pair.
Department heads/supervisors are responsible for providing the appropriate PPE for their employees. Environmental Health & Safety and Risk Management can assist and evaluate for the proper selection of PPE based on the hazards present. 
Required training depends on your department and role. Most employees can complete basic safety training through . Supervisors should coordinate with Environmental Safety & Health and Risk Management if they have any questions or concerns about the selection of required safety training for their employees. We also offer certain in-person or specialized trainings upon request.
