Alumna and professor wins national Future Leaders Award

Jessica Ross, an alumni of ĢƵ's dental hygiene program and current assistant professor in the Department of Human Services, was recently honored with the K. Patricia Cross Future Leaders Award. The award recognizes emerging leaders in higher education who demonstrate a commitment to innovation, equity, and community engagement.

A career of service and teaching: Dr. Jean Snyder named Alaska Family Physician of the Year

Dr. Jean Snyder’s career in family medicine has spanned decades, continents, and nearly every corner of patient care. Now, after years of serving communities across Alaska and beyond, she has been recognized as the Alaska Family Physician of the Year by the Alaska Academy of Family Physicians.

From classroom to courtroom: ĢƵ opens the John E. Havelock Trial Simulation Center

With the recent opening of the John E. Havelock Trial Simulation Courtroom, students now have access to a premier, experiential learning environment to master their craft. The courtroom will also serve as a community resource where Alaska’s legal professionals can hold practice trials and conduct continuing education and training.

Get to know Dr. Jay Butler, new dean of the College of Health

As we step into a new year, we are excited to welcome Dr. Jay Butler as the new Dean of the College of Health. A veteran of the public health and infectious disease field, Dr. Butler also has years of experience working in Alaska’s unique health landscape. He’s excited to bring fresh energy to COH’s goal of expanding its capacity to meet community-based health needs and train the next generation of healthcare workers.

As a neonatal nurse practitioner at Providence Alaska Children’s Hospital and adjunct faculty member for the ĢƵ School of Nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice alumna and graduate student hooding ceremony speaker for the fall Class of 2025 Stacy Brunquist weaves education into everything she does — training new caregivers, guiding parents learning to care for their newborns, and sharing knowledge with professionals from Utqiaġvik to Sitka.

Health sciences major and psychology minor Maisha Chowdhury describes choosing to attend ĢƵ as the best decision of her life (so far) and for making her the person she is today. The fall 2025 undergraduate commencement speaker hopes her own journey inspires others to take risks and follow their passion.

On Nov. 13, the College of Health hosted a legislative event highlighting the Alaska Comprehensive Forensic Training Academy (ACFTA) in the Health Sciences Building. Co-led by Nursing Professor Angelia Trujillo, D.N.P., and Social Work Professor Kathi Trawver, Ph.D., the event brought together health care professionals, community partners, and legislators to learn more about ACFTA’s mission.

Kinesiology major Elaina Mack shatters Seawolf record in rout over Northwest

Elaina Mack, a senior kinesiology major from King Cove, broke school records with 10 successful three-point shots in the Seawolves game against Northwest U. Mack scored a total of 41 points over the course of the game.

ĢƵ College of Health Kicks Off 2025–2026 Interprofessional Education Series on “A Lived Experience with Disabilities”

Panelists connect via Zoom during the “A Lived Experience with Disabilities” session, offering personal testimonies and professional insights that helped students better understand the realities and opportunities within disability-related care.
