First Generation Celebration at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ

The 2025 First Generation Celebration Week was made possible by a small unofficial planning team in collaboration with UAA staff and faculty, UAA departments, and community partners who dedicated their
time to spread awareness. Thank you to all who took the time to share your story, and to create and
share the message across campus. Read more about .

What does it mean to be first generation?

Typically defined as a student whose parent(s) or legal guardian(s) did not complete a four-year bachelor's degree. This can include students whose parents attended but did not finish college, those who attended community college, or in some cases, even those whose parents completed a degree in another country.

Why do we celebrate being first generation?

  • To encourage students who may doubt their ability to complete a degree.
  • To highlight the strengths of being first.
  • To raise awareness of the impact and accomplishments of first generation students.
  • To build a support network of individuals from similar backgrounds.
