Anchorage (April 19) – After leading his team to a 20-win season and an NCAA Tournament berth, Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball senior Hasaan Herrington was honored Sunday with the 2025-26 Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Athlete of the Year award, presented at the athletic department’s annual end-of-year banquet at Lucy Cuddy Hall.
A 6-3 guard, Herrington was a unanimous First Team All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference pick and the first Seawolf to earn GNAC Defensive Player of the Year. The former East Anchorage High School star was also an NABC Second All-District Team honoree, recognizing him as one of the top 10 players in the 35-team NCAA Div. II West Region.
Herrington ranked No. 3 nationally and led the GNAC with a 3.26-to-1 assist-turnover ratio, posting numbers of 11.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He was the only player in the GNAC to finish top 10 in both assists and steals, helping Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ tie for second in the regular-season standings and a runner-up finish at the GNAC Championships.
Among his big games, Herrington had a career-high 24 points (8-12 FG, 4-5 3FG) and nine assists in Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ’s home win over MSU Billings, plus 13 points and a career-high 14 assists – the most by a Seawolf in 10 years – in a home win over Central Washington.
On Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ’s career lists, he finished No. 5 with 124 steals and No. 12 with 258 assists, while becoming the only Seawolf this decade to appear in two NCAA Tournaments. His 3.3-to-1 assist-turnover ratio was also No. 2 on Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ’s single-season list, behind only 2007-08 Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Athlete of the Year Luke Cooper.
Herrington is the 11th men’s basketball player and seventh Alaskan to be named Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Athlete of the Year since the award was inaugurated in 1985.
In addition to the AOY honor, the department also issued major awards to women’s basketball standout Elaina Mack and a trio of academic stars.
Mack received the GCI Alaska Born & Raised Award, presented to a graduating senior who has lived in Alaska more than half of his or her life, graduated from an Alaska high school, and demonstrated outstanding contributions to his or her team. The King Cove native helped the Seawolves to a 16-11 mark as their lone returning player, while notching school-record scoring and three-point efforts, and finishing No. 14 on the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ all-time scoring list with 1,128 points.
The Dresser Cup – the department’s top academic honor – was shared by senior hockey player Logan Acheson, sophomore men’s skier Carlo Cordone and senior volleyball player Madison Galloway, all of whom recorded 4.00 cumulative grade-point averages.
