My name is April Alvarez, and I was born in Texas and raised in Alaska. At 18 I moved back to El Paso, Texas and I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Multidisciplinary Studies from the University of Texas at El Paso, where I also met my husband. During that time, we welcomed our first son, and we have now been married for 14 wonderful years. Recently, we were blessed with our second son, making this season of life especially meaningful.
This academic year, I will graduate with my Master of Public Administration from the University of Alaska Southeast, a milestone that reflects my commitment to education and leadership. Professionally, I serve as the Administrative Manager and Building Manager for the College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP) at the University of Alaska Anchorage. I am passionate about supporting my team and am inspired by the growth and innovation happening across our college.
In addition to my work at CBPP, I am actively engaged in university governance. This summer, I was nominated to serve as the Vice President of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Staff Council, an honor that reflects my dedication to strengthening staff engagement, improving processes, and fostering a positive workplace culture for the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ community.
Outside of work, I enjoy playing soccer with my long-time soccer team through Soccer Alaska and spending quality time with my friends and family.

My name is Allison King. I was born in California, and my family moved to Texas when I was 4. I studied music at Ouachita Baptist University and Texas Christian University, and I studied library science at the University of North Texas.
I moved up to Alaska in 2021 to work as the Cataloging and Circulation Technician at the Mat-Su College library. Since I started working here, I have gotten involved with Mat-Su College, the broader UA system, and the Alaska Library Network through serving on various committees and the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Staff Council. I enjoy getting to know people and working together toward common goals.
Outside of work, I enjoy reading, spending time with friends, and being involved with music at my church.

Jack McCaslin was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. His family is from Alaska and Montana, and his wife is from Costa Rica. Outside of work, Jack enjoys reading his Bible and praying, volunteering, investing in people, cross country skiing, hiking, and international travel.

My name is Mike Detmer and I was born and raised in Cincinnati, OH. Wanting to experience a new culture, I moved to HawaiÊ»i, where I earned my BBA from Chaminade University of Honolulu. I went back to school and earned my MS.Ed in College Student Personnel from the University of Dayton, where I developed a passion for working with college students. I began my time at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ in 2021 as a First Year Advisor working with Exploratory/Undecided students, and then transitioned to my current role in 2023 as the Career Development Coordinator in Career Services. I spend my time guiding students through career exploration, providing opportunities for professional development, and helping them build connections for a successful and confident transition beyond graduation.
I joined Staff Council to help advocate for staff, to create a culture of trust, and to build relationships with more campus partners.
