Motions and Resolutions
March 6th, 2026 Update
The Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Staff Council has been hard at work passing resolutions to advocate for staff members at the University. In January, we passed three resolutions that were supported by UA Staff Alliance and have been sent to UA President Pat Pitney.
The Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Staff Council Bereavement Leave resolution looks to allow employees to take one day of sick leave following the death of a friend or family member outside of the immediate family. Taking five days of sick leave following the death of an immediate family member are currently permitted along with taking five days of sick leave to arrange and/or attend a funeral. Currently, for the death of friends and family members outside of the immediate family, taking one day of sick leave is permitted to arrange and/or attend a funeral, but no days are allowed to immediately grieve their loss.
The Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Staff Council Layoff Equity between Exempt and Nonexempt Employees Resolution looks to provide both exempt and nonexempt employees three months notice or three months pay in lieu of notice prior to the effective date of the layoff. Currently, exempt employees are provided three months while nonexempt employees are provided four weeks.
The Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Staff Council Protections for Term-Funded Employees Resolution looks to provide better job protections for term-funded employees, particularly as relates to contract renewals. Specifically, it advocates eliminating the ability to non-extend term-funded contracts for reasons other than unresolved loss of funding or the end of the work that the employee does. This is particularly helpful as under current UA Policy the University has complete discretion on whether or not to extend term-funded contracts, and could choose to non-renew an employee and post their job the next day. Additionally, the University does not provide term-funded employees the right to an administrative review for non-extension of a term-funded contract.
